Rocklands (Away), 28 January 2007

Rocklands -v- Wymondham

Result: 2-4 Win
1-1 Halftime

Goalscorers: Mellor, Plater, Plater, Parker

Wymondham Player of the Match: Matt Plater

Get in there! Cheerleader Smiley

Well, what a difference a fortnight makes. It just goes to prove what I said to the boys before the match: if they wanted to lose the game, all they had to do was go out thinking they were going to lose. If they wanted to win the game, all they had to do was go out thinking they were going to win the game and so it was!

Positive and flowing almost from the start, we went a goal down early on, missed some halfway-decent scoring opportunities, were unlucky as well when Jack Morris hit the woodwork, but a great finish from Josh Mellor brought us back on even terms by halftime. The one-all score didn’t reflect the play though, as we looked the better side. Alex and my decision to keep the team unchanged for the second half was a direct result of the way the boys played in the first half and our positive talk during the halftime break reflected just how well they were playing and how we thought they were doing.

A slightly shaky start to the second half saw us conceding a second goal early on, but boy did we come back with an excellent goal from Matt Plater before he got a second after yet another big push forward and following Rocklands’ equaliser. He could have scored a hat-trick had his shot not gone over the crossbar (the end of a great joint effort from Matt Elvin, Dan Brindle and Matt Plater).

And would someone please explain to me why Nick Parker feels compelled to keep scoring from long distance ‘crosses’ and catch everyone - me included - by surprise? Long may that continue…

So we finished the game victors again. Proof that on the day with the right mindset we can win against anyone.

Two final votes of thanks: firstly to Dan Warncken and Henry Leather, neither of whom were played by us - it’s the toughest task of all to sit on the bench for an entire match - as we were keen to keep the momentum going; and secondly to Kristian Websdale for being our linesman again and putting up with the occasional bit of hassle from us!

Fixtures

Training, 27 January 2007

Training this Saturday will be on the Astroturf at the Wymondham Leisure Centre from 10.30am until 11.30am. I will be elsewhere, so Alex will be running it on his own. Please let me have your training subs. on the Sunday instead to save Alex collecting them.

Rocklands, 28 January 2007

This is an away fixture kicking off at 10.30am at Great Ellingham Recreation Centre, Watton Road, Great Ellingham. Once you come into Great Ellingham past the crossroads there’s a school and just after that on the right hand side there should be a wooden sign saying “Gt Ellingham Recreation Centre”.

Those travelling directly there should let me know please; everyone else should be at Ketts Park at 9.30am to leave at 9.45am.

Please can the lads wear our home kits (Red/Black).

Match Postponed!

Our home fixture this Sunday against Spixworth has been postponed due to the swamp-like nature of Kett’s Park (even before any of the forecast rain for Saturday).

Instead, we will be training at Wymondham Leisure Centre on the Astroturf from 10.30am to 11.30am on Sunday morning (any old kits).

Under 11s Update, 14 January 2007

Thanks to Michael Elvin for acting as linesman for us today.

Fixtures

Training, 20 January 2007

Despite our lads clearly needing a ‘back to basics’ session, there will be no training this Saturday.

Spixworth, 21 January 2007

This is a home fixture kicking off at 10.30am at Ketts Park. Please can the lads wear our home kits (Red/Black) and be at Ketts Park at 10.00am ready to warm up and for team selection.

Conduct

After today’s game against Blofield, I was told of two incidents that occurred, one during regular play and one after the final whistle. During regular play, one player was heard to question and back-chat the referee on a number of occasions. After the final whistle, another player was alleged to have twisted a Blofield player’s hand when he should have been merely shaking it in a sporting manner.

Neither incident is acceptable.

We had developed a reputation as a clean and fair team and there is no way I want this to be jeopardised by any petty or ill-mannered behaviour. I do not care what happens or is acceptable for other teams: when you play for us, you abide by the referee’s decisions, you play to the whistle and you do not retaliate even if provoked.

In the former case, if we are truly aggrieved, we can complain to the FA who in ordinary circumstances will back up the referees 100% or who will investigate any well-founded complaints. Mere mistakes and poor decisions we have to live with and can bitch about between ourselves.

In the latter case, if there are incidents involving other team players, tell me and I will take it up with the other team’s manager or the league.

In both cases, complaints made against us can lead to deduction of points and fines being imposed.

I have spoken to the parents of the lads concerned and will not need to take matters further this time, but both should know that any further incidents of this kind will lead to them being taken off the field of play by Alex or me and further sanctions being imposed.

I hope this is the last time I need to mention player conduct.

Blofield (Away), 14 January 2007

Blofield -v- Wymondham

Result: 2-6 Loss
2-2 Halftime

Goalscorers: Plater, Parker

Wymondham Player of the Match: Matt Plater

Probably our most disappointing game yet: during the first half, the boys failed to take advantage of playing downhill, with the wind and with the sun behind them, such that they missed four easy scoring opportunities. When they did choose to actually play football rather than simply attending the fixture, there were moments of good play such as both the goals that we did manage to score.

The second half was simply dire. A complete lack of defence, no will to mark or tackle players throughout the positions, a failure to grasp or apply the offside rule, etc. That and two further easy scoring opportunities squandered. I wondered whether the boys had also forgotten the basics.

Wymondham lost because nobody in the team wanted to win the game or even play to their ability. Blofield, on the other hand, showed that they wanted to win the match and deserved to win because of it.

Fixtures

Training, 13 January 2007

Saturday morning training this week will be on the Astroturf pitch at Wymondham Leisure Centre from 11.00am to 12.00pm (usual training fees apply).

Blofield, 14 January 2007

This is an away fixture kicking off at 10.30am at Heathlands, Woodbastwick Road, Blofield Heath. From the A47 Southern By-Pass, head towards Gt. Yarmouth. At the Brundall roundabout, continue on the A47 for roughly ½ mile and take the sliproad towards Blofield Heath. Continue into Blofield Heath and then on the way out, it’s on your left just before Rosemary Road on your right.

We will leave Ketts Park at around 9.30am, so if you intend going directly, you should meet us shortly after 10.00am at Blofield Heath. Please can the lads wear our home kits (Red/Black) - I have again specifically made sure that they won’t clash.
